About Us

Breastfeeding Medicine Association of Aotearoa is a charity formed by a group of medical professionals in Aotearoa passionate about the equitable provision of high-quality evidence-based care for breastfeeding māmā and pēpi.

We seek to advance the field of Breastfeeding Medicine in Aotearoa, New Zealand, by providing medical practitioners and allied health providers with guidance, education, mentorship, and opportunities for professional development.

We are dedicated to the promotion, protection, and support of breastfeeding. We support the National Breastfeeding Strategy for Aotearoa and the implementation and monitoring of the World Health Organisation (WHO) International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes.

We wish to provide a voice for breastfeeding māmā and pēpi in the realms of public policy and decision making to ensure optimal support.

The Importance of Breastfeeding

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (to which NZ is a signatory) recognises the right of the child to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health. There is an overwhelming body of evidence that the First 1,000 Days is a critical time to establish this long-term highest attainable state of health for our tamariki. Breastfeeding, secure caregiver attachments and relational cue-based care in infancy have significant impacts on an individual's short-term and long-term emotional, mental and physical health.

Helping whānau to create an enjoyable and sustainable breastfeeding relationship has both short-term and long-term health impacts for the breastfeeding parent as well as their pēpi. Supporting these sustainable relationships and impacting long term health outcomes is especially important to reverse health inequities for Māori māmā and pēpi. We recognise Māori as tangata whenua of Aotearoa New Zealand, and are committed to the principles and obligations as outlined in Te Tiriti of Waitangi.

Economics

"In sheer raw bottom line economic terms, breastfeeding may be the single best investment a country can make"
